Geneva: Bentley Brooklands Coupe

Named after a racetrack located in Surrey, England, Bentley Azure’s coupe sibling is all you’d expect from a company that makes cars for the ultra-rich: super-luxurious, extra-powerful, unique and of course, handmade. Powered by the most powerful Crewe-built V8 engine ever produced, the Brookland’s twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre unit develops 530bhp and 1.050 Nm of torque. Introduction

The Bentley Brooklands is a stunning new model that marks the company’s return to the luxury coupé market and reaffirms its reputation as creator of the world’s most exclusive coupés. It is the ultimate Bentley: a stylish, four-seat, grand touring coupe with classic British proportions and muscular performance.

Bentley’s chairman Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen describes the motivation behind the new coupé: “Bentley’s proud sporting pedigree, forged by the exploits of the immortal ‘Bentley Boys’ on the famous Brooklands racetrack in the 1920s, was the inspiration for our new coupé, capturing all the style, power and splendour of that era.” *

Sporting design cues are matched by the phenomenal performance engineering of Bentley’s legendary Crewe-built V8 engine. The new Bentley Brooklands possesses the most powerful V8 the company has ever produced – a 530bhp, twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre unit that also produces a prodigious 1050Nm of torque.

Each Brooklands coupé will be hand-assembled, employing traditional coach-building techniques and the craftsmanship skills in wood veneer and leather hide for which Bentley is renowned. To ensure exclusivity, lifetime production will be strictly limited to just 550 cars, with deliveries expected to start in the first half of 2008.

Exterior Design: Classic British Proportions

Bentley’s rich coupé heritage provided the stimulus for Director of Styling, Dirk van Braeckel and his design team. For van Braeckel, the task was very clear: “To create a powerful, muscular and rakish grand touring coupé with classic British proportions, in the finest Bentley tradition.”

While the new Brooklands is influenced by Bentley’s fine coupé lineage, its design and engineering are thoroughly contemporary. The proportions of long bonnet, short front overhang and long rear overhang achieve the design objective perfectly, while the low roofline, steeply raked screens and pillarless side glass convey both power and movement.

As the Brooklands will be built in very limited volume, the designers were able to introduce unique features that necessitate specialist coach-building techniques, as Programme Director, Ashley Wickham, reveals: “The Brooklands’ beautiful flowing lines are testament to the traditional coach-building skills and craftsmanship of Crewe’s highly talented workforce.”

The ‘floating’ rear screen, for example, is a contemporary take on traditional coachbuilt Bentleys. The lower edge of the screen sits well above the upper edge of the boot lid to provide a flowing, flawless line to the back of the car. This can only be achieved by individually hand-welding the rear wings to the C-pillars

The fitment of 20-inch diameter wheels as standard, signalling the surefooted, robust and dynamic character of the new model, reaffirms the powerful stance of the new Bentley coupé.

Interior Design: Peerless Craftsmanship with a Sporting Character

Dirk van Braeckel describes the mission for the Bentley interior design team: “To create the perfect Bentley coupé: sumptuous hand-crafted luxury with a distinctly sporting character.”

As in every Bentley, peerless craftsmanship is to the fore, enhanced by the warmth and richness of the finest natural materials. To tailor for their individual requirements, customers may choose from an extensive palette of hides, veneers, carpet tones and seat belt colours.

Its four-seat architecture and deeply bolstered seats lend the Brooklands’ interior a distinctly sporting atmosphere, complemented by design accents such as aluminium foot pedals and footrest. A new, single-piece, hide-trimmed roof lining flows uninterrupted from the front windscreen all the way to the rear of the car, mirroring the long, sleek profile of the elegant exterior.

The interior designers sought to offer the very highest levels of comfort and legroom, in true Bentley grand touring tradition, while the pillarless window design enhances the feeling of space.

The Brooklands’ cabin is wider both front and rear than the previous Bentley Continental R coupé – the rear by 10 percent – and it easily exceeds the interior leg, knee and headroom of any luxury coupe on sale today. This allows four adults to be accommodated in supreme comfort. Individual rear seats with electrically operated sliding cushions, set further back than on the Azure, are separated by a new centre console, incorporating both storage and cup holders.

Most powerful Crewe-built V8 ever – 530bhp, 1050Nm

Beneath its muscular, rakish, coach-built body lies the most powerful Crewe-builtV8 engine ever produced, developing 530bhp. Maximum torque is an astonishing 1050Nm, the highest ever developed by a production V8 engine. Although performance figures are subject to final confirmation as part of the on-going development programme, the new Bentley coupé will deliver supercar levels of in-gear acceleration combined with Arnage refinement.

At the beginning of the project, Dr Ulrich Eichhorn, Member of the Board, Engineering, tasked his power train specialists to deliver an extraordinary driving experience in the Bentley coupé tradition: “Exhilarating, effortless, accessible performance for those truly passionate about their driving was our prime objective.”

Launched in the Bentley S2 saloon in 1959 with a capacity of 6.23 litres, the legendary, Crewe-built V8 engine has continually evolved. The first V8 was very advanced for its time with an all-aluminium construction, a five-bearing crankshaft and a well-supported camshaft, producing nearly 200bhp and 400Nm of torque. The result was a light and supple powertrain that produced maximum torque at low engine speeds, the hallmark of every Bentley ever produced.

1969 saw the capacity grow to 6.75 litres, where it remains to this day, but by far the most significant change came in 1982, with the introduction of a turbocharger to create the near-300bhp Mulsanne Turbo, a car that transformed the image of Bentley. In 1999, the single turbo engine, by now featuring port injection and charge cooling, was installed in Arnage, with twin turbos arriving in 2002, developing up to 450bhp.

For the 2007 model Arnage, the V8 engine saw a step-change in performance and refinement which became the starting point for the new Bentley Brooklands. A re-profiled camshaft and new, low-inertia turbochargers, which operate with greater efficiency at lower engine speeds have resulted in reduced turbo lag, enhancing that prodigious wave of torque at any revs, the hallmark of a true Bentley. These changes extend the power potential of the V8 in the Arnage to 500bhp and 1000Nm of torque. For the Bentley Brooklands, further component optimisation and engine calibration ensure record power and torque levels from this hand-assembled engine.

As with the latest Arnage, the V8 engine is mated to a six-speed transmission with strengthened casing that transforms the way in which both parts of the drive train communicate. A sophisticated, locking torque converter and ESP system ensure that the driver can readily access the prodigious power. A semi-automatic function allows manual gear selection for even greater driver control.

*The challenging Brooklands banked racetrack, which this year celebrates its centenary, was the birthplace of British motor racing. During the 1920s and early thirties, Brooklands, located in Surrey, England, was the scene of some of Bentley’s greatest racing triumphs, forging an inextricable link between the company’s motorsport heritage and this historic race circuit.

Geneva: Seat Altea Freetrack 4x4 Concept

We’re off to a good start this morning as Seat surprised us with a pre-production version of the upcoming Altea Crossover. Dubbed Altea Freetrack, the concept is equipped with VW’s 4WD system and its powered by the Leon Cupra’s 240Hp 2.0 TFSI engine. Four-wheel drive system and 4x4 design elements apart, the Freetrack justifies its crossover name with an additional 185mm’s in road-clearance in comparison with the stock Altea. According to Seat, the (toned-down) production version of the Freetrack will soon be making its debut on the road. Thing is, since the stock Altea has an identity crisis –it doesn’t know if it’s a practical hatchback or a sporty MPV, I’m guessing this will be another all-round, all-nothing model.-Continued: Click “Read More…” bellow to see the high-res image gallery & the press-release

This year, SEAT has once again succeeded in surprising visitors to its stand in Geneva with a concept car that showcases the look of a forthcoming road-going model: the Altea Freetrack Prototype. Far from being a mere styling exercise for the Technical Centre in Martorell, the SEAT concept car unveiled at the Swiss show gives a preview of the styling and technological innovations of the Altea Freetrack that will soon be making its debut both on our roads and off them.

The Altea Freetrack Prototype has an aggressive look which is fully in keeping with its adventurous character, along with sporty and dynamic lines, to reflect the character of the Spanish brand. Every detail of its interior exudes luxury. Thanks to both the design and materials used, the Freetrack Prototype is ready to offer passengers a first-class journey.

185 mm higher than the Altea XL, the Freetrack Prototype achieves excellent figures for its angles of approach and departure and its ramp breakover angle. These features, combined with its full four-wheel-drive system, make the Freetrack Prototype a genuine off-roader, with the vehicle also incorporating a 240 hp 2.0 TFSI engine and six-speed manual gearbox. This goes to show that the Altea Freetrack Prototype does not just have sporty looks: it is an authentic sporty 4x4 in its own right.

Moving inside, the model's 2+2 layout and racing-style bucket seats immediately demand attention. In addition, there is a practical storage area situated between the rear seats.

Multi Driving Concept (MDC) has been consolidated

This prototype represents the culmination of SEAT's Multi Driving Concept (MDC) first launched four years ago with the Salsa concept car and later consolidated with the Salsa Emoción, both of which had their origins in the new generation of SEAT models. This concept promotes the traditional MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) from its predominantly family niche to the status of an all-terrain vehicle with sporty, aerodynamic lines as well as a level of interior versatility and spaciousness that satisfies all demands. This is a vehicle for non-conformists who are looking for that little bit more.

The use of the Multi Driving Concept marks out the Freetrack Prototype as a model offering the loading capacity and interior space of a family vehicle, the technology and preparation of an authentic 4x4, and the thrills and performance of a sports model.

Ready for anything

The Altea Freetrack Prototype's styling takes its cue from the Altea XL. However, a raft of modifications has been incorporated to adapt the new model's performance to the terrain it will be tackling.

The principal change is a chassis with 310 mm of ground clearance. The Altea Freetrack Prototype measures 1,766 mm in total, making its angles of approach and departure and its ramp breakover angle those of a true off-roader: 26 , 29 and 23 respectively.

The vehicle's width has also been increased by 60 mm, mainly to accommodate the imposing 255/50 mixed-size tyres mounted on 8J x 19 wheels.

The boldly styled oversized bull bars leave no doubt as to the robust nature of the Altea Freetrack Prototype. The same goes for the plastic side guards with aluminium inserts, which protect the body against knocks from rocks and other obstacles.

At the front end of the vehicle, there is an attention-grabbing exclusive bumper with hexagonal grille air intakes, a totally new feature in the SEAT range. The bumper itself is totally smooth with no moulding or edges, while the lower section incorporates two LED fog lights with aluminium casings. Bi-xenon headlights with AFS technology display the number 4 inside the chassis, highlighting the car's off-road character.

At the rear of the vehicle, the most eye-catching feature is the spare wheel which is fitted into the hatchback, and is covered with a plastic trim printed with a SEAT and an originally "4x4" logo. The Freetrack's boot is accessed by opening the spare aluminium wheel holder, which incorporates the model's name.

Another couple of attention-grabbing details at the back of the Altea Freetrack Prototype are two triangular-shaped tailpipes integrated into the bumper. The tail lights, meanwhile, are made with transparent glass, allowing the inside to be seen. Both the tailpipes and rear lights give the model a distinctly sporty feel.

Viewed side on, the impressive 19 inch wheels, which are by no means a typical feature on this type of vehicle, really stand out. The design of the five twin-spokes shows off the Altea Freetrack Prototype's brake discs, with callipers of eight and four pistons. Another design touch worth mentioning are the plastic guards located on the lower part of the doors - and the same protection can also be found on the wheel arches. These additions give the Altea Freetrack Prototype the undeniable air of a 4x4, while aluminium headlamps add a touch of elegance.

A further noteworthy element are the door mirrors, featuring integral indicator lamps as well as an absolute first for any SEAT model: their location on the doors and not on the A pillar.

The Altea Freetrack Prototype has been designed to enable customers to enjoy the great outdoors and reach areas which are out of reach for most vehicles. The model offers a stunning panoramic tinted roof, to make the most of the view, while it can also prevent too much sunlight from entering the vehicle and overheating the interior. The luggage rack, exclusive to this model, is also located on the roof. The Altea Freetrack Prototype also differs from other SEAT models in that it has no roof-mounted aerial; instead, it is integrated into the rear window.

The final feature requiring a mention - and one that cannot be missed - is the colour used for the concept car: an exclusive matt white finish which was developed exclusively for this prototype. This hue marks the Freetrack out as having a positive, open character with an affinity for nature. However, at the same time it still has an aura of sportiness that is inherent to this colour.

The excitement of a real adventure

It is quite evident that the SEAT Altea Freetrack Prototype is a fully-fledged all-terrain vehicle. However, the robustness of the vehicle's drivetrain and its exterior is in stark contrast to an interior that has been styled to ensure maximum enjoyment of all the vehicle's features. Enjoy the great outdoors and a sense of adventure without having to compromise on comfort in any way.

The two-tone brown and white leather upholstery produces a level of elegance and brightness inside the car which is further emphasised by the aforementioned panoramic roof. The robust feel of its exterior is mirrored in the interior by individual bucket seats which are designed to provide their occupants with an added sense of safety, thanks to their excellent hold. Furthermore, there is a storage area between the rear seats.

The 2+2 seating arrangement allows each of the passengers in the Freetrack Prototype to enjoy the pleasure of travelling in individual seats. Each seat is the personal micro-habitat of its occupant.

Special attention was devoted to the concept car's dashboard, both in terms of design and materials. The driver's section is covered in dark brown leather, while the instrument binnacle hood is white. The same hues are used on the exclusively designed steering wheel, which apart from brown and white leather, also features aluminium.

The passenger section of the dashboard has a soft, light finish, which is both pleasant to touch and pleasing on the eye, making for a top-quality interior.

The centre console really catches the eye. Two screens concentrate driving information in the upper section, including data for off-road driving, and air conditioning information in the lower section. The air diffusers are a new design, exclusive to Freetrack, and have an original vertical layout on the centre console, and a circular layout on the sides.

The instrument panel is also exclusive to this model, with two dials located on the right-hand side and a multi-function screen to the left.

Finally, the absence of a luggage tray for the boot adds to the feeling of space inside the vehicle. The boot also offers a clever solution to the problem of shifting luggage: a panel on a guiding wire holds bags in place.

Top-class engine

The Altea Freetrack Prototype comes with the same power unit under its bonnet as the new León Cupra: the 240 hp 2.0 TFSI, which is perfectly equipped for whatever the journey ahead holds in store, be it over asphalt roads or dirt tracks. The 2.0 TFSI engine's power is directed to the four wheels via a Haldex-type arrangement with a hydro-mechanical connection and electronic control, to ensure that the tractive force is distributed permanently in a progressive and precise manner.

As such, the Altea Freetrack Prototype represents the definitive solution for anyone who wishes to explore the roughest and most challenging off-road terrain with the whole family, but is also looking for a high-performance vehicle that allows them to enjoy on-road motoring to the full.

Dynamic and unexpected: New interior and exterior design language

Rüsselsheim/Geneva. The world premiere of the GTC Concept (Gran Turismo Coupé) at the 77th Geneva Motor Show gives an insight into how dynamic and refreshing Opel’s new design language will look in the future. “This concept car demonstrates the new interpretation of the Opel brand,” explains Alain Visser, Executive Director, European Opel Marketing. “The GTC Concept embodies the confident, emotional direction we’re taking with Opel. Its exciting lines combined with its high driving dynamics and interior flexibility reflect what the Opel brand trademark characteristics will be in the future.” Even a new, more refined brand emblem, with the Opel name proudly embossed into the Blitz ring, is suggested.

“The GTC Concept importantly signals the next chapter in Opel’s design identity,” says Bryan Nesbitt, Executive Director, GM Europe Design. “Our team strategized to envision the new essence of Opel – more confident, relevant and distinctive – in a high-performance, yet versatile, four-seat coupé. This style is what to expect of future Opel products.

“You have seen a number of recent concept cars become reality at Opel,” says Hans Demant, Opel´s Managing Director and GME Vice President Engineering. “Concepts like the GTC Genève and Antara GTC or the Flex-Fix rear carrier system from the TRIXX previewed their production variants. This car is a confident ambassador for the brand and could play a similar role for us, previewing the engineering and design cues of our next-generation Opels.”

The four-seat coupé is powered by a 220 kW/300 hp, 2.8-liter V6 turbo gasoline engine and features an intelligent, electronically-controlled four-wheel drive system, which provides optimum traction and stability as well as excellent agility in all driving conditions.

Brand-typical on-board flexibility is ensured by the thoughtful “Flex4” system (patent application submitted). The backs of both rear seats can be docked separately to the front seats by remote control, creating a spacious three or two-seater with flat load floor and up to 1020 liters of luggage compartment capacity. As is typical of Opel cars, the seats do not have to be removed or installed.

Dynamic design: Visually communicating the Opel brand promise

The GTC Concept reveals the next-generation of Opel styling. Much like the Opel Speedster did in 1999, or the GTC Genève Concept did in 2003 this car marks a break in the evolution of Opel’s design language and signals that the next chapter is about to be written.

Key elements of the silk grey-lacquered Coupé concept car finished with a matte grey paint (length/width/height: 4830/1867/1432 millimeters, wheelbase: 2737 mm) begin with an aggressive front end performance face emphasized by large aluminum vertical intakes that intersect the headlamps. These vertical elements are mimicked in the rear exhaust elements, proposing an unmistakable down-the-road signature performance graphic, coming or going.

The proud front is highlighted by a prominent, trapezoidal grille with signature Opel bar and Blitz, executed in polished aluminum, and gracefully finished with a bolder Opel Blitz emblem concept. The centerline crease coupled with the distinctive aluminum vertical intakes and outboard LED vertical driving lamps choreograph in harmony to visually communicate power and strength. The distinctive design continues with LED technology, enabling creative headlamp inner shapes that propose a night time signature illumination graphic in the front and rear lamps.

Another significant design cue of the two-door sport-coupé with its sleek silhouette is the sophisticated bodyside shapes and surfacing. The sheetmetal surfaces suggest athleticism coupled with elegance to provide tasteful distinction in a visually loud marketplace. The car features sculpted side lines that further progress the Opel profile shown on the Antara and Opel GT production vehicles.

In addition, large flares hug the aggressive wheel and tire package, visually suggesting road confidence to the customer. Thanks to the wide track (front/rear: 1627/1629 mm), the Opel GTC Concept provides a commanding stance, planted by 20-inch rims with 245/40 R20 “red line” styled rubber. The wheels reference the motor sport aesthetic of black rims - however, elegantly finished with high- gloss black spokes contrasted with machine polished edges, alluding a signature performance wheel look.

The GTC Concept’s rear visual solutions strategically echo the design language of the nose with an integrated rear bar and blitz emblem resting on the distinctive Opel rear center crease. Sophisticated surface development sculpturally integrates the rear spoiler into the sheetmetal to visually communicate performance. The rear appearance features Opel signature shaped rear lamps, uniquely displaying a LED night lighting graphic showcasing the exterior brand identity. The smart exterior shape and aerodynamic characteristics are rewarded by the cD value of 0.25.

Interior design: Warmer and more inviting

Opel’s interior designs have progressed to become warmer and more inviting in products like the new Corsa, Antara and Opel GT. However, the Opel GTC Concept significantly represents the next chapter of Opel’s interior brand identity. Echoing the exterior, the interior shapes and surfaces are sculpturally-crafted to visually articulate a dynamic driving experience. The dashboard’s top-pad wraps around from the instrument panel to the door, embracing the occupants. The sweeping décor dynamically stretches one’s eye from the surfaces of the door and instrument panel, creating a memorable environment. The horizontal theme is secured with a large integrated centerstack design floating above the décor surface, an appearance reminiscent of premium audio equipment.

Complementing the exterior material theme, matte ebony surfaces are contrasted with rich high-gloss piano black décor finishes and structurally elegant aluminum accents, revealing a new standard of Opel aesthetics. The U-shaped aluminum graphic on the steering wheel is reflected again on the center console and the gear shifter, visually connecting the driving interfaces to emphasize Opel’s driving dynamics. The rotating navigation control is ergonomically positioned, allowing it to easily be located and controlled by the driver, without having to remove his/her eyes from the road. The four, sporty, round instruments encircled by translucent rings are backlit in dynamic red, replacing Opel’s traditional amber tones. These interior appearance solutions intentionally reinforce the dynamic ownership experience Opel provides.

As a final identity concept, the refined “redline” graphic of the tire pattern is vertically woven into the contoured sport seat surfaces and the centerline of the steering wheel, proposing that a visual performance identity can be distinctive without compromising taste.

Intelligent packaging: Compact exterior with spacious, flexible interior

“In the last few years, many cars have gotten bigger without passengers benefiting from it. We have reversed this trend with the Opel GTC Concept. In comparatively compact exterior dimensions, we optimized the decisive feel-good dimensions in the interior,” says Frank Leopold, Manager GME Innovation, Show Cars and Advanced Packaging. “In this way, the car fits like a glove.”

With the lower seating position and vertical hip point − known as the H-point− , both front occupants sit perfectly integrated in the car. Thanks to the lower-set instrument panel, outward visibility remains excellent. This also provides a generous sense of space, an effect strengthened by its color: the instrument panel’s upper section is dark, while the lower section is light.

The intelligent packaging is further highlighted by plenty of space in the rear of the Opel Concept car, despite its flat roof line: rear headroom is 920 millimeters. The rear seats are set low, but the four-seat, two-door car still offers Opel’s brand-typical flexibility thanks to a novelty developed by Opel engineers: the “Flex4” interior concept (patent application submitted).

“Flex4” enables the backs of both the rear seats in the Coupé concept car to be moved forward separately at the touch of a button via sensor-control and docked to the front seats. The luggage compartment cover is thereby automatically pulled over the remaining seat surfaces in the floor. This creates a three or two-seater with a flat load floor up to 1.80 meters long. Luggage compartment capacity increases from 500 liters to 755 liters (three-seater) or up to 1020 liters (maximum capacity: up to waistline).

Powerful engine and intelligent four-wheel drive system

The Opel GTC concept car is powered by a turbocharged, 220 kW/300 hp, 2.8-liter V6 gasoline engine with two variable camshafts, which is combined with a six-speed manual transmission. Maximum torque of 400 Nm is available from 1850 up to 4500 rpm, and accelerating from zero to 100 km/h is calculated to take around six seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

The power from the high-tech turbo engine is channeled via an advanced, electronically-controlled four-wheel drive system, which is fully integrated into the car’s adaptive IDS-Plus chassis management system. An electronically-regulated torque transfer device seamlessly distributes power between the front and rear axles for optimum traction and driving performance. 2008 Renault Twingo II: Premature... Geneva Birth

Well it doesn’t look like we'll have to wait for Renault’s media gathering tomorrow to see the all-new 2008 Twingo II as a full press-gallery has already spilled the net. Measuring about the same size as the outgoing mini (1.6m long, 1.7m wide and 1.4m tall) the Twingo’s exterior design is based on Renault’s homonymous Paris Show concept, though obviously significantly toned down (or rather a let-down...). Surprisingly enough, the French mini’s interior will certainty raise a few eyebrows as this is something you’d not normally expect from a car of this category.

According to our initial info, the Twingo will be offered in two versions, a basic and the GT. If you scroll down and check out the pictures the GT is the one with the chrome colored details. No official word out on the technical specs, but we’ve heard that the concept’s 100Hp strong 1.2-litre Turbo (petrol) will be on the check list. Sales of the 2008 Renault Twingo are expected to start in Europe during this spring.

A longstanding player in the small car segment, Renault has sold more than 2.4 million Twingos since the model's launch in April 1993. Now for the first time UK drivers will be able to get behind the wheel of the ever-popular city car when New Twingo goes on sale in the UK in September 2007.

The launch of New Twingo forms part of Renault Commitment 2009 and the introduction of 26 new cars, including 13 aimed at conquering new markets. New Twingo boosts Renault's presence in the small car segment alongside Clio Campus, Clio III and Modus.

Thanks to its chassis derived from the B-segment and a powertrain range featuring the new TCE (Turbo Control Efficiency) 100hp petrol engine, which offers class-leading performance and fuel consumption, New Twingo's superior dynamics set it apart from its predecessor. New Twingo also targets a broader, more international clientele thanks to the distinctly dynamic styling of the GT version and the robust lines of the other versions, plus the availability for the first time of right-hand drive models for the British market.

New Twingo stands out as a further illustration of Renault's know-how in the domain of optimising cabin space and interior versatility, by making full use of the car’s compact dimensions (length: 3.60m). The interior is extremely modular thanks to its four independent sliding seats. Meanwhile, New Twingo's boot volume is the biggest in its segment, ranging from 165 to 285 litres (VDA) with all four seats in place and is extendable to a full 959 litres with a two-seater layout.

Communicative and occupant-friendly, New Twingo features a ‘TunePoint’ Audio Connection Box which enables personal music collections stored on USB keys, portable MP3 players or iPods® to be played through the car's audio system and operated via the steering wheel-mounted controls. Twingo is also available with hands-free Bluetooth telephone controls complete with 'hold' function for safer motoring.

In keeping with the "my Twingo" philosophy, buyers can customise their new car thanks to a range of decorative decals for the exterior.

Safety was at the forefront of the New Twingo design team's priorities. Their work covers all aspects of this key area, from positive, predictable road-holding and accident prevention systems to occupant protection in case of impact. New Twingo's robust construction, braking and suspension performance, ergonomics and equipment from the next segment up put the car at the top end of the small city car segment in terms of safety and ensure its ability to pass even the most stringent crash tests. Numerous comfort and safety features not previously available for Twingo have also been introduced, including lateral airbags, automatic climate control, cruise control/speed limiter, height-adjustable steering wheel and automatic headlamp activation, etc.

New Twingo is nonetheless very affordable, both to buy and to run. CO2 emissions do not exceed 140g/km even with the most powerful engine and New Twingo makes a valuable contribution to the '120-140g/km of CO2' pledge of Renault Commitment 2009.

New Twingo is the first model to be renewed within the framework of Renault Commitment 2009 and had to meet an extremely exact brief in terms of quality and profitability. The new car will be produced at the Novo Mesto factory in Slovenia.

New Twingo: the saga continues…

As a volume carmaker, Renault has been actively present in the small car segment for several decades. Since its launch in April 1993, Twingo has won over some 2.4 million buyers who form a highly diversified clientele. Today, New Twingo features all the necessary qualities to ensure that its success story continues by appealing to an even broader, more international customer base.

Renault – a big player in the small car segment

As a volume carmaker, Renault has long been recognised for the quality and inventiveness of its products in the small car segment and New Twingo is no exception. Since its unveiling at the 1992 Paris Motor Show, Twingo has revolutionised the world of city cars. In response to shifts in customer demand across the span of its 14-year life, Twingo took the form of seven different collections and a long list of striking special and limited editions.

New Twingo – a complementary addition to Renault's A/B-segment line-up

The European small car market has been reasonably stable since 2000, yet that hasn't prevented it from being extremely competitive, owing to the presence of the traditional European makes and, more recently, the advent of newcomers from Asia. Even so, Renault stands out as a major player in the segment and New Twingo reinforces the brand's line-up with a view to optimising its coverage of this end of the market. With a length of 3.60 metres, New Twingo is a practical, communicative, compact car. Meanwhile, Clio Campus (length: 3.80m) provides versatility and low running costs, while Modus (also 3.80m) focuses on family buyers and features the lines and modularity of a small MPV. Last but not least, Clio III packs a big car spec into a total length that remains below the 4-metre mark.

Appeals to new customers and markets

New Twingo's mission is twofold, the first being to build on its ever-growing reputation. In France and Germany, 47 per cent of Twingo owners were loyal to the car and replaced it with another Twingo. The second aspect of the model's mission involves reaching out to a new clientele seeking a safe, versatile, practical and feisty package with compact dimensions. One-third of European small car buyers are aged under 35, including 11 per cent who are under 25. Amongst its new targets, New Twingo seeks to appeal to this young clientele, essentially urban-dwellers hooked on new technologies and for whom the car is seen as a symbol of freedom, as well as an extension of the world in which they live. New Twingo covers all these criteria thanks to its unique personality and unprecedented connectivity for its segment, not to mention its inherent versatility, driver appeal, travelling comfort and dynamic, reassuring handling.

The United Kingdom is Europe's fourth biggest market in the city car segment, while the countries of southern Europe – notably Italy – are drawn by agile, versatile small cars with a strong personality and which are inexpensive to buy and run. Now available in right-hand drive form and boasting more attractive lines than ever, New Twingo meets both these demands. An assertive personality underpinned by dynamic styling

The GT version of New Twingo features dynamic looks while the lines of its other variants exude an unmistakable sense of robustness. Its overall design echoes the key themes suggested by Renault Twingo Concept when it was unveiled at last year's Paris Show. Inside, its comfortable, occupant-friendly cabin enables all owners to identify easily with the car.

Dynamic looks and a personalised range

Thanks to its long bonnet, the robust stance of its rear flanks and its fluid side lines, New Twingo boasts a modern, pleasing design. Its long wheelbase (2,367mm) and extremely short front and rear overhang dimensions exude an attractive blend of elegance and robustness.

The Dynamique and GT versions that will go on sale in the UK place the emphasis on New Twingo's dynamic appeal. Their design is racier and both versions come with a specific front bumper, while the foglamps are picked out by a satin grey surround. These two variants of New Twingo feature a more assertive demeanour for a car of its segment, an impression reinforced by the gloss black headlamp masks and satin grey exterior mirror housings.

The gap between the rear edge of the bonnet and the windscreen accentuates New Twingo's distinctive lines. Again according to version, the rear bumper houses the rear parking proximity sensors and includes protective beading. The GT version of New Twingo is distinguishable by its aluminium-finish rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tailpipe.

A cabin to match individual tastes and requirements

New Twingo's intuitive cabin layout features the same simplicity and practicality as its predecessor, while also communicating an unmistakable sense of comfort and well-being. The materials employed boast enhanced quality and the dashboard places the accent very much on storage. The sensation of space and comfort is amplified by the large panoramic electric sunroof (length: 666mm - width: 497mm/front seats, 405mm/rear seats) which is controlled by a one-touch rotary switch and incorporates an anti-pinch function as standard.

Two trim levels available

New Twingo will be available from its launch in the UK in a choice of two trim levels –Dynamique and GT which are perfectly in keeping with the sporty, technological and stylish values of its target market. New Twingo's philosophy allows buyers to create a car that matches their individual tastes and needs. Another important aspect of the new car's appeal is the availability of a long list of equipment from the next segment up never previously seen on Twingo (automatic climate control, cruise control/speed limiter, rear parking proximity sensor, etc.).

The Dynamique and GT trim levels feature a racier ambience in keeping with their exterior styling.

The Dynamique trim level is based on sporty design details, with orange upholstery stitching, a dark grey dashboard and a rev-counter. The exterior comes with sports bumpers and a bespoke grille with foglamps picked out in a satin grey surround. The body colour exterior mirrors contrast with the distinctive black B-post strip. New Twingo Dynamique sits on 14-inch wheels with specific wheel trims.

With its assertive lines, the GT version is even more dynamic and stands out due to its sports bumpers complete with GT branding, body colour side protective mouldings, 15-inch Noxiane aluminium alloy sports wheels, chrome tailpipe, GT-branded sill, rear lip spoiler and satin grey exterior mirror housings. Inside, in addition to the leather steering wheel and gear lever knob, the GT trim level also offers extra-tinted windows as an option.

Roomy, practical and occupant-friendly

New Twingo stands out as a worthy successor to Twingo. Its three doors open to reveal four comfortable seats. A genuine small tourer, it places the emphasis on travelling comfort, modularity and interior space thanks to numerous innovative storage spaces, a layout based on four sliding seats and unrivalled boot space for its segment.

New Twingo – compact and agile

With an overall length of 3,601mm, width of 1,640mm, wheelbase of 2,367mm and height of 1,472mm, New Twingo's compact dimensions make it ideal for city motoring. The extra 170mm in length that sets it apart from its predecessor have been employed to provide additional safety performance and cabin space for its occupants without detracting from its main objective which is to remain easy to control in all circumstances, with a small turning-circle diameter (between kerbs) of 9.85m (up to 10.55m according to wheel size).

Even more interior space

Twingo stood out as the small car benchmark in terms of interior space and New Twingo takes this a significant step further. Indeed, Renault's engineers have paid particular attention to optimizing all available cabin space, which of course goes hand in hand with enhanced travelling comfort. New Twingo exudes an extraordinary sense of roominess for its class, an impression emphasised by the car's vast glazed area which not only ensures a spacious, brightly-lit cabin but also improves all-round visibility compared with Twingo.

This impression of space is backed up by the figures, since New Twingo offers a generous extra 26mm of headroom, while rear passenger kneeroom has also been extended by 30mm. Meanwhile, rear passenger legroom (increased to 226mm) is equivalent to that of vehicles from the next segment up.

Spacious and modular

New Twingo's versatility enables it to meet all types of needs. It features four independent sliding seats and with the rear benchseat folded down, this figure increases to 951 litres (VDA). In this version, the independent rear seats can slide fore and aft over a distance of 220mm, with a ratchet stop every 10mm.

With the independent rear seats tipped forward to form an 'estate car' layout, a full 959 litres (VDA) of boot space is available. A pushchair can be carried in the boot whatever the position of the rear seats, which can also be folded forward to form a table.

New Twingo makes life easier for its occupants. Its modular cabin has 11 well thought-out storage spaces, most of which are within easy reach of the driver. In addition to the lidded 13-litre passenger-side glovebox, New Twingo comes with 2.2-litre door bins, a 1.7-litre storage space on the dashboard cowling in front of the driver, stowage to the left of the steering column (0.8 litres), two cup-holders and stowage space at the foot of the centre console, plus a 3.7-litre bin underneath the driver's seat (according to version).

At the rear, the netted map pocket on the front passenger seatback and space in the rear side trim provide a further 2.5 litres of stowage to make a grand total of 28.4 litres, that is to say an additional 16 litres over Twingo. The door bins can each house a 1.5-litre bottle.

The accent on travelling comfort

New Twingo is very much about passenger comfort. The driving environment has been carefully thought out to ensure first class ergonomics, starting with the steering wheel – now height-adjustable – which is tipped an extra five degrees towards the driver compared with Twingo. The pedal assembly comes with a footrest, while the gearlever has also been repositioned to make sure it falls perfectly to hand. The density of the foam employed for the seats has been selected to hold passengers even more firmly, but comfortably, in place. The driver's seat is height-adjustable (according to version) and enables drivers to choose a position suited to their particular physique. Visibility has also been improved, notably in terms of head-up vision for taller drivers who consequently benefit from significantly improved driving comfort. Tall occupants also benefit from the new car's generous headroom which makes getting in and out of the car easier than ever.

Access to the rear seats has been simplified thanks to an all-new design. On the driver's side, the mechanism is designed to return the seat to its initial position when the seatback is raised again. In order to minimise the necessity to bend the body and also facilitate head clearance when climbing onboard, the aperture itself has been enlarged compared with Twingo, which is also of benefit of course for rear passengers when they swing out their feet.

The dashboard instrumentation comprises an LCD speedometer and a display for the 18 warning lights located in the driver's direct line of sight.

The Dynamique and GT versions are equipped with a rev-counter (optional on other versions according to country) which is mounted on the steering column, while a digital radio display takes the place of the aforementioned cubby.

New Twingo features a long list of new comfort- and safety-enhancing equipment normally associated with vehicles from the next segment up and not previously available for Twingo.

According to version, New Twingo is available with the following standard or optional equipment (*):

The TunePoint Audio Connection Box

The TunePoint Audio Connection Box enables music recorded on a portable MP3 player to be played back through New Twingo's own in-car entertainment system and loudspeakers, enabling occupants to enjoy their personal music collection while on the move. The steering wheel-mounted controls permit the driver to adjust the volume and scroll through the MP3 player's menus, whether via a USB key, a portable MP3 player or an iPod®. The TunePoint Audio Connection Box is equipped with three aux-in sockets and is securely fixed in the glovebox.

MP3 Radio with audio plug

An existing feature in the family tourer segment and on upper-range models, as well as on Clio III, the MP3 radio with audio plug – mounted directly during New Twingo's assembly– now features automatic CD/MP3 detection and the display of record data (artist's name, album and song title). It is as simple to use as a portable MP3 player and is equipped with an RCA audio-in plug in order to connect a portable MP3 player.

Bluetooth hands-free telephone controls

Unprecedented in the small city car segment, this innovative wireless telephony kit fits neatly into the vehicle. The intuitive system automatically detects the presence and type of telephone, while a hold function contributes to safer motoring. It also retrieves the telephone's address book and ensures that conversations are not interrupted, with calls transferred to the vehicle's own loudspeakers for enhanced listening comfort. The vehicle's radio automatically cuts when an incoming or outgoing call is detected. All these functions are controlled by the steering wheel-mounted controls and dashboard display and the system is compatible with a long list of Bluetooth telephones currently available on the market.

Customising New Twingo !

Exterior customisation accessories

Another first proposed by Renault in the small city car segment is a range of accessories designed to customise New Twingo's exterior. A wide range of decorative treatments is available to give New Twingo a more sporting, dynamic, elegant or endearing appearance, suited to the owner’s preference. A range of decals has been produced for the door handle hollows, B-posts, doors, front wings and rear side panels.

Punchy engines combined with reassuring, dynamic handling

New Twingo comes with an extensive choice of powertrains that complement the safe, dynamic handling, including the all-new TCE 100hp petrol and 1.2 16V 75hp petrol engines which will be on sale in the UK.

Reassuring road-holding

Renault's engineers have designed a car that is as much in its element in and about town as it is on long journeys. New Twingo inherits Clio II's chassis which was acclaimed for its dynamic, reassuring performance and the newcomer's handling has focused on three fronts: safety, poise and comfort. The MacPherson-type front suspension features hydraulic dampers, coil springs and an anti-roll bar, and the diameter is 26mm. The suspension's tuning has been optimised to provide even better road-holding and comfort, while the chassis makes a significant contribution to New Twingo's versatility and dynamism.

The programmed deflection H-beam rear suspension is compact and lightweight. For travelling comfort and the effective suppression of vibrations, it comes with vertically-mounted dampers and variable-rate coil springs with rubber bushes at each end to minimize the transmission of vibrations to the bodyshell. The diameter of the rear anti-roll bar is 22.5mm.

The flexible mountings that link the suspension to the body play a key role in striking the ideal balance between the car's vibration-suppression performance (for comfort) and stiffness (road-holding). In the case of New Twingo, special attention has been paid to these mountings which it has inherited from Clio II and which combine a honeycomb construction for effective vibration filtering and rigidity for enhanced roadholding.

New Twingo is perfectly at home when zipping about in traffic thanks to its electric variable power steering which has been tuned to favour control in city use and precise steering for a greater sense of security on open roads or at high speeds.

The 14-inch tyres are available in two widths (165 and 175mm), while the GT version is equipped with 15-inch, 185mm wide tyres. The turning circle is a low 9.85m with 165mm wide tyres (10.4m with 175 and 185mm wide tyres). Detailed research has gone into the stiffness of the tyres themselves with a view to making the most of New Twingo's safe, efficient handling. Despite the tyre's bigger dimensions compared with Twingo, their rolling resistance has been reduced by 15 per cent which has in turn contributed to lower fuel consumption.

A more assertive, dynamic feel for the GT version

Particular attention has gone into the engineering of the GT version's chassis with a view to providing both outstanding dynamic performance and a high degree of comfort. The suspension arms are equipped with stiffer bushes for extra cornering stability, while the upper strut bushes ensure enhanced steering performance and precision. New Twingo GT also comes with bespoke power-steering settings for extra dynamism and driving pleasure.

Responsive, environmentally-sensitive engines

New Twingo's dynamic qualities are heightened by a broader range of engines, including a high performance petrol powerplant which delivers enhanced performance compared with the new car's predecessor, yet which remain inexpensive to run and environmentally friendly. The petrol engines, including the most powerful option, emit less than 140g of CO2 per km.

Two petrol engines are available in the UK, namely 1.2 16V 75hp and the brand new TCE 100hp, both of which incorporate the On Board Diagnostic system for lasting efficiency of the emission control equipment. Both powerplants comply with Euro4 emission standards.

1.2 16V 75hp
The 1,149cc 1.2 16V (D4F) engine delivers 75hp (55kW) at 5,500rpm and torque of 107Nm (11mkg) at 4,250rpm. Particularly responsive at low revs, its idling speed of just 650rpm contributes to lower fuel consumption. Equipped with this engine, New Twingo emits less than 140g of CO2 per km.

TCE 100hp (74kW) (Turbo Control Efficiency)

New Twingo joins Clio III and Modus as the latest recipient of the new TCE 100hp petrol engine which is exclusively available for the GT version. In addition to its punchy performance, it combines the fuel consumption of a 1.2-litre motor with the power of a 1.4-litre powerplant and the torque of a 1.6-litre engine. The TCE 100hp is based on the 1.2 16V 75hp block (with which it shares 70 per cent of its parts) and is equipped with a low inertia turbo that minimizes lag thanks to its small diameter turbine and compressor.

Maximum power is 100hp (74kW) at 5,500rpm, while maximum torque (145Nm) is available at 3,000rpm.

The combination of its small size and low inertia turbo ensures feisty performance from low revs, while maximum torque is available from very low down and across a particularly broad rev band. The turbo comes with an 'overpower' function that enables drivers to benefit from a temporary power and torque increase of 5hp and 6Nm respectively in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears at engine speeds of over 4,500rpm. Meanwhile, its advanced technology and contained size ensures the lowest combined cycle fuel consumption for a 100hp petrol engine (5.9 litres/100km and 140g of CO2 per km), as well as maximum driver appeal. With a 0-62mph time of just 9.8 seconds, the TCE 100hp delivers class-best performance.

Two types of transmission

To benefit fully from New Twingo's engines, two types of transmission are available: a manual five-speed box and the Quickshift robotized gearbox. A manual five-speed box (either the JB1 or JH3 box according to engine) is available for the full range of petrol and diesel engines. For extra character, its gearing has been selected as a function of the different engine options however, with shorter ratios for the TCE 100hp (for punch and response). The Quickshift5 (JH1) robotized gearbox is available with the 1.2 12V 75hp powerplant. Based on a manual gearbox and equipped with an electro-hydraulic shift system, it can be used in either automatic (no driver intervention) or manual flick-shift mode. In addition to the comfort of automated gearshifts and its low incremental cost to the customer, the robotised gearbox reduces fuel consumption by three per cent.

New Twingo benefits from Renault's vast expertise in the realm of safety, from the engineering of positive, predictable road-holding to accident prevention and occupant protection in case of impact. Its robust construction, braking and suspension performance, ergonomics and equipment from the next segment up put the new car at the top end of the small city car segment in terms of safety.

New Twingo's lines and proportions suggest robustness, while the inherent qualities of the Clio II chassis and suspension on which the new car is based ensure a remarkably high level of safety for its segment. Renault engineers have paid special attention to providing reassuring road-holding without detracting from the newcomer's agile yet comfortable handling.

New Twingo features the latest driver-aid evolutions, including Continental MK70 ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist. The hazard warning lights are automatically activated under heavy braking, a feature that Renault is alone in offering in the small city car segment.

New Twingo's enhanced braking performance stems from its 259mm-diameter discs (plain or vented according to engine and trim level) which are coupled with eight-inch diameter drums at the rear on all versions. The Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is currently under development and will become available after the model's launch. Other features also contribute to making New Twingo safer. Its ergonomics, driving environment and exterior mirrors – which have been designed with future legislation in mind – combine to provide enhanced visibility and consequently better perception of potential hazard situations. The cruise control/speed limiter, steering wheel-mounted controls and the automation of certain tasks – such as headlamp and windscreen wiper activation – are all features rarely found in this segment and contribute to driving comfort and safety.

Optimal protection for all occupants

New Twingo's architecture and the presence of certain safety features, including a reinforced structure against front and side impacts and curtain airbags, mark a break with Twingo for which they were not previously available.

According to version, New Twingo is equipped with between two and six airbags: two front airbags, two thorax airbags and two curtain airbags.

For the first time at Renault, the passenger airbag is of the so-called '3D' type. When deployed, its form and volume are optimised to spread out the load between the passenger's head and thorax.

To minimise damage to the groin area in a frontal impact, the front seat cushions are equipped with an anti-submarining system, while the independent rear seats benefit from a profiled seat cushion. Again in the event of a frontal impact, New Twingo's sill and door beam spread forces over the full length of the car to provide maximum passenger protection, ensuring that the cabin serves as a safety cell. The lateral airbags (according to version) also play a big part in the safety of occupants in the case of side impacts.

New Twingo's front passenger seat is equipped with Isofix anchorage points, as is the rear benchseat (or independent rear seats, according to version). Child seats can be mounted at the front with the back facing the direction of travel. New Twingo accordingly offers tangibly superior safety performance in comparison to its predecessor.

Chapter 7

Reliable, inexpensive and environmentally sensitive

Careful attention has gone into the design of even the smallest details of New Twingo to ensure lower running costs and high durability. Both engines available for the car emit less than 140g of CO2 per km and New Twingo contributes to keeping Renault Commitment 2009's environmental pledges.

Lower running costs and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty

New Twingo simplifies the life of its owners thanks to its long servicing intervals, with oil changes recommended every 18,000 miles in the case of petrol-engine models (except GT version: 12,000 miles). The air filter and sparkplugs need replacing every 37,000 miles, while the timing belt should be changed every 75,000 miles (petrol versions). In day-to-day use, all engines feature lower fuel consumption and the switch to electric power steering has produced a further saving of between 0.2 and 0.3 litres according to cycle. To reduce repair and insurance costs, notably with a view to RCAR* tests, New Twingo features specially designed components that take into account the constraints associated with minor knocks. The use of polypropylene for the rear beam ensures that practically all of the energy produced in a low speed impact is absorbed. New Twingo comes with a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty thanks to features such as its fully galvanised engine sub-frame and wax-injected hollow sections.

*Tests employed by insurance companies to evaluate a vehicle's repairability. They involve front and rear crash tests at 15kph.

The environment - a key issue

New Twingo makes a valuable contribution to the '120-140' pledge of Renault Commitment 2009 in which the firm has committed to selling one million vehicles by 2008 that emit less than 140g of CO2/km, including one-third that emit less than 120g/km. Indeed, New Twingo benefits from outstanding CO2 emissions performance: the petrol engines emit less than 140g of CO2/km. To achieve such a high level of performance, detailed attention has been paid to honing the car's aerodynamics, combating friction and saving weight.

New Twingo is 85 per cent recyclable by weight without quality or all-round performance being compromised. Designing parts with a view to their recyclability at the end of their working life has led Renault and its suppliers to investigate innovative solutions and to take this factor into account during the design and quality phases. Recyclability is helped by the use of polypropylene, while the technique of marking parts has also become more widespread to facilitate the job of recyclers. Plastic components weighing more than 100g and elastomer components of more than 200g are marked to indicate their nature.

In this way, when cars are stripped, parts can be easily sorted by type of material and directed to the appropriate recycling process. New Twingo also comprises 15kg of recycled materials and 13kg of renewable materials (latex, cotton, leather, card, wood). New Twingo is produced at the Novo Mesto factory in Slovenia which received ISO 14001 certification in 1999 (renewed in 2002 and 2005) and which figures amongst the Renault Group's leading factories in terms of their low environmental impact.

Chapter 8

Quality and profitability at the core of the X44 project

As part of the new model offensive set out in Renault Commitment 2009, New Twingo had to meet an extremely specific brief in terms of quality and profitability. Renault's latest small car will be produced at the Novo Mesto factory in Slovenia.

Upon his arrival as President of Renault in May 2005, Carlos Ghosn instructed engineers to optimise the cost effectiveness of the X44 project. Twingo's replacement needed to meet a raft of quality- and appeal-related targets at an extremely competitive cost. Initially delayed to ensure it responded even more closely to customer demand, the project then picked up speed and the car's development was completed within 21 months of the new design's approval.

Controlled production-related costs

The technique of carry-over served as a powerful lever in achieving this feat. Certain components from previous projects noted for their reliability and effectiveness were incorporated into the new vehicle. In addition to being a pledge of quality, this approach also eliminated unnecessary design costs and lead-times. Although an entirely new car in its own right, New Twingo incorporates parts from the chassis used for Clio II whose quality earned it recognition in 2006.

Constraints associated with the adaptation of production plant were similarly minimised in this way. New Twingo is built at the Novo Mesto body assembly factory in Slovenia – which already produces Clio II – and was designed to fit in with the same production processes as Clio II from start to finish (body shop, paint shop and final assembly). 80 per cent of manufacturing operations are identical for both models.

Renault's policy of producing models that feature a high proportion of shared parts in a single location has born fruit. Total production-related outlay for New Twingo was limited to €400 million, a significant saving compared with the same figure for Clio II when its production began in Novo Mesto.

A factory focused on quality

New Twingo is a beneficiary of the extremely high quality requirements laid out in Renault Commitment 2009. Renault's newcomer faced the same quality-related constraints in terms of design, production and evaluation as those applied to all the brand's vehicles. Just as the forthcoming Laguna is targeting a top-three ranking in its segment regarding product quality and service, Twingo too is looking to make it onto the podium in its class. In the wake of Modus and Clio III, New Twingo reasserts Renault's know-how when it comes to producing high quality small cars.

The Revoz factory in Novo Mesto rose enthusiastically to this challenge and the combination of careful attention to the organisation of production, supplier control and operator training has culminated in an unprecedented level of quality. The reinforcement of quality-related standards was a natural sequel to previous work undertaken at the Revoz plant which saw it emerge as one of Renault's top performers – anywhere in the world – in this domain. The factory can notably claim exemplary results in terms of finished vehicle quality and its efforts were rewarded in 2006 when a J.D. Power study ranked Clio II amongst the top-three vehicles in its segment.

New Twingo also benefits from Novo Mesto's optimised organisation which not only guarantees profitability but also respect of delivery times. Indeed, the Slovenian factory is the group's best performer in this domain as well as in terms of compliance with production schedule sequences.

Progress on the product and service quality fronts as set out in Renault's Excellence Plan implies active management of safety, ergonomics and work conditions in the factories. At Novo Mesto, the arrival of New Twingo has taken the significant progress regarding production ergonomics already achieved with Clio II a step further by taking these factors into account from the design stage. The number of different workstations in the factory has been cut by 20 per cent thanks to the setting up of Kaizen schemes.

Finally, the ISO 14001 certification obtained by the Novo Mesto factory in 1999 was renewed in 2002 and 2005 and this plant figures amongst the Renault group factories that boast the lowest impact on the environment. In ten years, the amount of water consumed per vehicle has been cut by a factor of two, while energy consumption has been slashed by 40 per cent.

A Slovenian-born Renault

The X44 project marked a decisive step in the Novo Mesto factory's integration within the Renault Group. Since 1972, the factory has produced a total of seven models for the brand. New Twingo, however, is the first time that production of a new vehicle has exclusively started here. This new responsibility has been greeted with enthusiasm and all the parties concerned feel a very strong sense of involvement.

The factory was directly involved in the project from the design phases in France. Scores of Revoz engineers, technicians and operators spent several months at Renault's R&D centre, the Technocentre, near Paris, where they worked with the design team on production processes and parts supply chain logistics at a very early stage. And, for the first time, the waves of prototypes were produced directly on-site. During the build-up to the start of production, some 60 engineers and technicians from the Technocentre travelled to Novo Mesto to help their Slovenian colleagues with final adjustments.

To produce New Twingo, the factory has been partly modernised and equipped with new technologies. A line of presses capable of producing major body parts has been installed; the performance of cataphoresis equipment (body surface treatment) has been upgraded and a covered test track has been built with a view to testing every vehicle that comes off the line. Finally, certain leading-edge technologies have been introduced in a Renault factory for the very first time. The innovative technique of laser-brazing for the roof enables body parts to be bonded to each other in a flexible and visually pleasing manner and this technique contributes to the seamless fluidity of New Twingo's lines.

The fact is that it is the first time that t his factory producing a brand new model also provided the Novo Mesto factory with an opportunity to develop its supplier network. As a result, the proportion of local content – i.e. the percentage of supplies sourced from the factory's catchment area – has been doubled in the case of New Twingo compared with Clio II and today stands at 60 per cent.

The production of the new model alongside Clio II has led to the recruitment of 600 employees which takes the factory's total staff to nearly 3,000. All operators undergo training concerning the new vehicle's assembly. An average 70 hours of training per person was given in 2006. Working on a three-shift roster, the factory's production capacity is 210,000 vehicles per annum.
